Should black folk patronize racist, Cherokee businesses?

with one comment

This is a weird one. Way back in time the Cherokees owned slaves in Oklahoma Territory, and after Emancipation a treaty was signed guaranteeing tribal membership to the so-called Freedmen. Last month, after years of wrangling and infighting the Cherokees voted those Freedmen’s descendants out of the tribe.

No one knows if the actuaries looked like the descendants would one day challenge the full-bloods (ha! blonde-haired, blue-eyed 1/64th ‘full-bloods’!), or if the latter-day Freedmen were bleeding resources, or if the Cherokees are just nasty racist assholes.

Either way, the BIA is threatening to withhold funds to the tune of $30M/year. Now, the BIA is the largest pool of puss on the planet (next to the Tulsa PD, of course), so it is hard to know who to root for in that one.

One thing is clear: whether or not black folk should support Cherokee-owned businesses should be a question any African American should consider. I would not, but that is just me.
